The Butterfly Tattoo (The Ball)

Production Company: Dynamic Entertainment
Directed by: Phil Hawkins
Novel by: Philip Pullman
Cinematography by: Michael Costelloe

The minute director Phil Hawkins arrived at my studio we sat at the piano and very quickly began to write the skeleton of the main themes and the motifs for each character and situation.

I worked closely with Phil on the score interpreting his thoughts and visions and turning them into themes. The film had its UK premiere and national screening slots in exactly 16 days, so we had to work fast. I sat down at the premiere screening, an exhausted shadow of my normal self, and duly slept like a baby.

This scene sets the mood and feel of the film, as well as introducing the location. The piano and orchestral music I composed only features once in the film and yet has received more positive comments and reviews than any other part of the score.

I am very proud of it, and I hope you like it as much as I do.
